Photo of the day: Baby Doll

I'm sitting with my four year-old friend Nizhoni as I write this blog. She asked me: "Is she lost? Is she playing? Where is her house? Is that her baby doll? Is this you when you were little?" Then she told me, "I think this picture is perfect." Me to Nizhoni, perfect.

Photos of the day: School Children

Heading down the road to school.
Michael listening to our friend share about his work at the school.
Love these train tickets!! So vintage!

Imagine Michael, Eric, Kris and myself sitting on a very local and very small train in India. We had wanted to take the big, "fancy," more direct train but those were booked and we were more than ready to leave Mumbai, so we choose the small, local, longer train. In walks three young guys about our age, who take a seat next to the foreigner's. As we spend more time talking to them they inform us they are school teachers in a remote village. Michael and I look at each other with the same thought "let's go!" They are more than excited to have us so we exit the train and are literally in the middle of nowhere. We start walking down a dusty road and they inform us the school bus will be by to pick us up.  We hop on a bus with tons of children, four or more per seat, and head off down the dusty road towards the school. Now mind you we are in the "bush" of India. We are later informed that this village has never had any foreign visitors before. We unload the school bus and find ourselves surrounded by over 300 children doing their morning prayers and meditation. It was one of the most beautiful and divine moments of the trip!

Morning Prayers

Photos of the day: An Alley in Varanasi

Varanasi is situated on the banks of the River Ganges. In Hinduism it is regarded as the holiest city in the world. It is a place that will consistently blow your concepts of reality into pieces. One morning Eric and I decided to go on a little photo expedition. I found this alley and I was in love. The colors just screamed at me, "take my picture, again, again. See this women's beautiful pink sari, don't miss that one." What resulted was Eric distracting a crowd of curious children so I could get some amazing shots. I included three of my favorites. Too see some incredible composition work that Eric did in the Varanasi check out his album here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=681428299&aid=277752

Photo of the day: Blue

Hello friends, family and faithful blog readers. I have returned from a whirlwind weekend of my sisters wedding. It was an incredible day and a great time of celebration. Back to portraits....here is another photo from our trip that I absolutely love. She was sitting in front of her home playing with her children when I took this portrait. I think she is just lovely.

Photo of the day: Village Cook

I met this sweet man in a small village we stumbled upon and he informed us he was the village cook. When we met he was off to take care of his garden, machete in hand.  I think he's just lovely. I'll be out for a few days, my sister is getting married on Saturday!! See you on Monday!

Photo of the day: Women of the train

Here is the last in my train photo series. I will probably venture onto portraits tomorrow because I just love portraits so dearly. I still have a very minimal understanding of editing and what I personally like. I spent about twenty minutes choosing between these two color variations. What do you think?

In other exciting news I completed one of my new years goals on Saturday......I got to be the second shooter at a wedding of a dear friend. I already passed my photos along but if I get them back I will preview a few. Found some good deals on canvas prints so I am hoping to get some photos printed soon to have a show at an art walk ( another new years goal). If you would like to donate to this exciting art endeavor in my life, just let me know.
Lots of love
Meli

Photo of the day: Train Community

Here is another train photo that I absolutely love. It was an image I didn't realize that I had until I came home and started going through the photos on my computer. I think it shows the diversity, the space, the joy, the colors, everything that's beautiful about the train.

Photo of the day: Indian Train

If you ask anyone in our group they are sure to tell you that one of their favorite parts of India was riding the train. The train created beautiful moments to engage the people, sights, sounds and smells of India in an intoxicating sort of way. For the next few days I will include some of my favorite train shots.

Photo of the day: Fruitful Morning

Here is a photo taken of a bicycle fruit stand the morning we started our trek in Nepal. I love the way the morning fog is still settled on the field and the vibrant colors of the fruit. If that doesn't inspire you to hike to 18,000 feet I'm not sure what will.

Photo of the day: Scenery

Well, I've made it through the photos from the trip and now begins the editing process. Honestly I know very little about editing. But, it's a goal this year to learn a bit and become better so here goes nothing. Below is a photo from a sunset morning atop Poon Hill in Nepal. My heart and my inclination is always to go for the portraits but I wanted to share some of the incredible nature we encountered.
